    One morning, I woke up at 4 am thinking about chili crisp. I love to make it, because it’s so versatile and delicious!After thinking a little bit, I decided I should maybe find a staple chili crisp that I liked enough to have on hand when I didn’t have the time to make some.Five YouTubes later, and Fly by Jing was the clear review winner!So, I ordered some, and it arrived a few days later. While this chili crisp isn’t exactly crispy, it’s got a clever and subtle tasty set of flavors.It’s great on just about anything, but I lean towards the savory uses.Cook some rice, add meat/veggies on top… and just throw some of this in for a simple and delicious meal!You’ll enjoy this, for sure, if you can’t manage to spend the hours it takes to make a good homemade crisp!

    People say “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” and I will admit, I had my hesitations. I’m an over ten year Laoganma chili oil devotee, and found it hard to imagine anything could ever be comparable, let alone better. But when a friend of mine recommended this product, I thought, hey I’m stuck in the house for the foreseeable future. Why not try something new?Let’s get the negatives out of the way first: is this on the pricier side of chili oil? Yeah. Is it clearly marketed for young 20-30 something hipsters and foodies? Also yes. But, most importantly, is this chili oil good enough that a Chinese grandma would gladly douse over her food at a hole in the wall Sam Woo restaurant with chipped tiles and teacups as old as the Cold War? To my utter pleasure: also yes.Sometimes when food gets marketed to the dominant culture, a lot of what makes it great gets lost in translation. It gets toned down or sterilized to the point it’s not even recognizable to the people who’s culture it came from. Even more patronizing, sometimes people try to “elevate” a food as if it wasn’t good enough to begin with. But I’m happy to say this isn’t the case with Fly By Jing chili crisp. It’s elevated, not because its predecessors were inferior, but because they WERE great. This chili oil isn’t trying to do something new, it’s simply saying, “I know why you love chili oil. Let’s try and get this to be the best possible version it can be.” And I think that can only be done by someone connected to the culture who is celebrating a wildly revered condiment.The flavors of this chili oil are deep and complex. It’s not necessarily the spiciest or has the most intense numbing flavor among chili oils I’ve tried, but there is something deeply unctuous of how all parts of the chili oil are. Some chili oils have a great texture, but the oil itself tastes just like that-oil. This one’s flavor permeated all throughout the jar, even without the added crispy chili bits.So will this replace my ultimate love, Laoganma? No. But is this going to be the last jar of Fly by Jing Chili Crisp I buy? Definitely not! I’m excited to experiment with this chili oil and see how I can take advantage of the flavor aside as a topping for my dumplings or fried rice, and rather than domination, I’m excited to see how this plays in tandem with my other tried and true chili oil and hot sauce favorites. This chili oil definitely made a devotee out of me.

    I have been looking for a great chili oil with just enough spice. While I haven’t tried all of them out there, this one is in the top two. It is unique as it is the first one that uses black beans in it.

    The flavor is “AH-MAZING”!! I literally put it on EVERYTHING!!! Not extremely hot, but has this wonderful smokey, smooth flavor and an intriguing multi-layered texture that my palate loves!! I’ve put it on everything from air-fried salmon, to an omelette, to tacos! I initially ordered one jar. The 2nd time I ordered, I ordered TWO!!!! Bon apetit!

    I bought a jar, which came in yesterday. It was horrible – I used it on everything, and I’m already out.What the heck, Fly by Jing? Selling small, expensive jars of infuriatingly delicious chili crisp is just outright mean.

    First things first, let’s be clear that I’m comparing this to the more ordinary “Lao Gan Ma” (at least I’m trusting that that’s the correct name) chili crisp I can get at the store, and understand that to me, that’s a perfectly fine chili crisp. There’s a little texture, a little crunch, some nice warm heat – I like it. I’m a fan.This is an entirely different experience. “Better” is up to you, but for me, yeah.First of all, it’s less a chili *crisp* than it is a chili *chew* if we’re gonna name it after texture. There’s less of a crunch than there is the feel of the preserved beans giving you a little resistance when you hit one. That’s not a complaint, but it was a bit of a surprise. I definitely wasn’t expecting that. Not unpleasant, though, as the texture’s been welcome in anything I’ve used it in.It’s also demonstrably hotter, and a greater percentage of oil. The brand I’m used to, there’s a jar full of crisp with a fraction of an inch of oil on top, so you can get a mix in every serving, the jar I got here was almost half oil. It was a little disappointing, but not a huge complaint as the oil itself is spicy and flavorful, carrying a good bit of the umami from those beans, too. And it’s definitely spicier than my usual. Not comically so, but enough that it required a little adjustment regarding what I thought I’d be tasting when I first tried it.The main difference, though, is the flavor. Normal chili crisp – for me – is just about adding a little crunch and a little heat. This avoids the crunch almost entirely, packs a little extra heat, and a ton of rich flavor. I still won’t be putting it on ice cream in the near future, but I’ve found that for me it’s at its best on tacos. Something I previously wouldn’t have bothered putting my old chili crisp on since it’d be redundant, but with this, it really works.Putting it over melted cheese, crostinis that I’m having with soup, adding to salad, tacos – as mentioned, even putting a big blob over a fried egg on some ramen – NOTHING I’ve tried it with has been anything less than spectacular. Will purchase again without a moment’s hesitation.
